Short Story- an Unmarried Woman
An unmarried woman ?

This was a small establishment run by a private company and therefore, we were only three people here. I was the clerk, there was an officer in charge of the unit namely Rattan Chand and we were given one peon whose name was Ram Chand with nick name- Ramoo. Rattan Chand was my boss and therefore, we had been addressing him as ‘Sir’ and he was calling me by the name of ‘Seema’.
I had been informed that ‘Sir’ was a married man having a small son and a beautiful wife. I had seen him with his wife in the market and I had invited them to my house and they were entertained well by the people of my family. I was still unmarried and my parents were in search of a boy for me. They were silent till I got appointment because they knew that in India a married girl has got better chances of having a suitable match for her and therefore, my parents had become choosy and they were not accepting the proposals coming from the other sides. I could collect that they were demanding that the boy should be having a better status and his income must be double the salary I had been drawing from this office. So the search was on and since I belonged to a simple family, there were no chances of having a ‘love marriage’ because such a system was not recognized in our families.
‘Sir’ was a married man, but I noted he had been having talks on different subjects with me and often he had been praising my intellect and my knowledge. He had got every appreciation for the work I perform on his directions and especially he was very happy to see my handwriting. He was of the view that my knowledge in English language was beyond me, because I was just a graduate and often he passed remarks that my knowledge is more that a post graduate. He often said that I too should go on and one day I too shall be an officer in the organization. He had been sending ‘outstanding’; reports on my work and conduct and often he recommended that I should be given some important job in the organization.
I was happy to note all these appreciations and I had started liking this man who was double in age. He too had been touching my hand, my arms, and some time he had been having me in his arms and had been pressing me with him. I liked all these touches because all these were from the opposite sex and I thought that he too might be enjoying my touches. When the peon was not present in the office we were alone in the office, he had sweet kisses on my lips, on my cheeks, on my eyes and he had been pressing and tracing his hands on my hair. He often had been pressing my shoulders and once or twice he had the same tea which I had finished to the half cup level.
I noted that he was reaching in time and I too had never been late to the office. He had started liking my company and I too had started liking his company and therefore as and when I had been on leave for one day or more and on occasions when he had been returning to the office after leave of some days, we both had been more kissing and more pressing. I could not understand as to what type of relations had developed in between us both, but when he was pressing me in his arms, a strange type of pleasure I could feel and I could collect from his face that he too was enjoying all these touches and all these kissing. And this continued for months and once of twice this class four employee Ramoo too could notice our meetings and therefore, once he had suggested me,” Madam, Sir is married man and you are still un-married and if the things go out, you shall spoil all your future, because no man on each shall have you his wife because a man cannot tolerate that his wife could be in arms of another man.” Ramoo was all right, but since he was just a class four employee, I ignored his suggestion and passed remarks against him,” You people from the lower strata of society do not know the norms which had been developed in the higher society. All such meeting and having the other sex in arms are normal in higher society”. Ramoo never commented upon and often he was not coming to the room when we both were in the room.
I was happy that ‘Sir’ was not surpassing the limits and all these kissing and all these having in arms are the actions which were not leaving any permanent mark on my body. Therefore, I was satisfied that my would be husband would never know that I had been in arms of a man and he had been having kissing too. We had never entered into sex intercourse, though we both wanted to complete this course too. But he was accepting my things that such a course would not be beneficial for me because my would be husband shall come to know that I had such an intercourse on the first night and I had heard that some of my friends had the divorce because their husbands could not accept them because of these pre-marriage sex intercourse.
In spite of all these touches and all these relations, wife of ‘Sir’ was having no knowledge. Had there been some information reaching her, she would have raised a strong voice. But good luck had been there that she was never informed about these relations.
I had been on leave for three days because my parents had taken me to another station where they wanted to see a boy for me. Sister of my father was arranging all these relations and it had been good luck that the boy was handsome and I could like him and he too accepted proposal from the side of my parents. All preliminary ceremonies had been completed and they fixed a date of marriage just after one month. I was happy that I could have a boy which I could like and when both were all alone, he too had liked me and was expressing his satisfaction on my beauty and on my behaviour. I was post graduate and was an office superintendent and was having good income. He had got a mother and a brother and he informed me that his father had already died two years back.
On the fourth day I reported for duty. I had not given information to my ‘Sir’ and therefore, I was very much eager to inform him that I had been engaged. I was having an idea in my mind that my boss shall be very happy to learn that I could get a boy of my choice or a boy which I could like. I had been given some sweets when I started towards my office and my parents had suggested me that I should share my happiness with other members of the office. When I reached my boss was already present in the office. He had a look on me and he could collect that I was having a more pleasant face on that date. He stood up and took me in his arms and had so many pressing and so may kisses and then allowed me to sit. I said, “ Would you like to listen the new information which is with me and which has given me more and more pleasure?” my boss was happy that I had some good news for him and therefore, he said, “ Please tell me the new information. I shall be joining your happiness.” I stood up and I opened the sweet pack and forwarded the pack before him and said, “ These are the sweets which the parents of my would be husband have given to me. I had been engaged to a boy yester day and therefore, you are the first person to whom I am giving this pleasant information.” He did not touch the sweets nor he could raise his head towards those sweets. He remained silent and said, “ Please keep these sweets with you. I am not feeling well to day and therefore, I shall not take sweets today.” I sat down on my chair and I noticed that on that date there were no further sweet talks, and he did not touch my hands, my arms on that date. I had been feeling that he was ill on that date, but he never stood up and took me in his arms and nor he had ever kisses on my lips, on my cheeks and there were no tracing right hand on my hair. I had been there for the next six moths with him, but he had been having distance from me. I could not understand this psychology of man even up to date.
