Have you ever thought of doing a long-distance bike ride, I mean really long-distance? You know like riding from Canada to Mexico in 12 days, and just over 150 miles a day. How about 200 miles per day - it can be done, I can average 200 miles a day, but I have a strategy.

I am able to ride for 15-17 hours and I am fearless, plus my bike weighs only 18.7 Lbs and I "ATM it" so I take no extra weight and you lose weight on these rides, body fat goes down to a minimum - "Lose Weight Now, Ask Lance How?" Ha ha ha. But remember when you are young you can do well over a 100 miles a day when you are young like that, Go For It!

So you ask; "What does "ATM it" mean exactly?"

"ATM it" means going light, with only an ATM card to pay for meals and hotels, power bars and GatorAid. Basically, no back pack and ditch the clothes or mail them back yourself when they get dirty, wring them out in the bathtub, let them dry and put them on and ride like the wind. No extra-weight. That is how I am able to do the 200 miles per day, average 21.5 mph and ride until you are completed; 10-hours or more depending on hills, weather, road conditions and strength of character.

Next you ask;  What type of bike do you have and are there any certain brands of bikes one should look into for ride this long and any bikes I should stay away from on a ride this long.

I have a Giant OCR 5, but if I had my drothers, I would have picked up a new Trek all carbon or went for a totally light Fuji, which I would have smoked after the ride, but at 16.8 Lbs, you can really fly. Peddle twice and you are doing 22 mph. The smoothness of the Trek is pretty fantastic, it is pleasure to ride, probably the best on the market, and a fair price for what you get.   Still, I did not go with the super light Fuji, I went with a more sturdy bike, which was inexpensive. The components are more important sometimes than the bike itself, you want carbon and Altegra Shimano. Indeed, you can pick up a used bike on Craig's list or eBay for $800.00 I think, I wanted a new one, because I knew I had to train to get back into shape and that means a lot of hard miles.

Each rider has their preference and all bike shops tell you they sell the best bikes on the market, really you need to get to know the different bikes. Perhaps join a bike club and consider all your options, if you are going to take gear and ride easy, a full on touring bike might be in your future, a little heavier, well yes, but built like a tank. So, there are advantages and disadvantages and getting the right bike for the right type of riding is a lot about compromise.
