Hanging Baskets In Container Gardening. What You Need To Know

Ever increasing in popularity, hanging baskets can provide a riot of color all summer long. Most hanging baskets include tender annuals so they cannot be placed outside until after the last frosts, but they can be made up in advance and left indoors until the danger of frosts has passed, by which time the basket will have filled out and with luck to be in full flower.

The most successful baskets are those in which the framework cannot be seen, as it is entirely masked by plants. In many cases, the hanging basket will look like a ball of plants.

Any combination of plants can be used to create different schemes. A wonderful pot-pourri of colors can be achieved with a mixed planting, although a more sophisticated effect can be created if you use plants in the same color or even plants of just one variety.

Containers need watering every day, sometimes more in hot, sunny conditions. Water retaining granules help to provide some moisture, but you will still have to water on most days when it does not rain.

Smaller containers dry out quicker than large ones because of their higher ratio of surface area to volume. Containers sheltered from the rain, and those that contain large plants whose leaves may prevent the rain reaching the compost, may need watering even after rain.

In winter it is important not to over water, the compost should be just moist. Automatic watering systems can be installed if you have a lot of pots or if you are often away.

Stand the basket on a large pot or bucket, in order to make it easier to work with. Carefully place the basket liner in position so that it fills the basket. Half fill the liner with compost, then mix in some water retaining crystals, following the manufacturer's instructions, to help prevent the basket from drying out.

Also add some slow release fertilizer; this will remove the necessity to feed throughout the summer.
