Edinburgh: Two Cities In One
<!-- @page { margin: 2cm } P { margin-bottom: 0.21cm } -->
Scotland's capital city, Edinburgh, is a place steeped in history, mystery and picturesque panoramic sky lines. Attracting over 1 million overseas visitors every year, Edinburgh is the second most visited place in the UK after London. Voted as the 'most desirable city in which to live in the UK', Edinburgh offers visitors and residents alike two very different places to stay within one city.
Named the 'Old Town' due to its medieval heritage, this part of Edinburgh features the city's oldest buildings which stretch right back to the 16th century. With the city's castle perched on top of an extinct volcano, the Old Town is an impressive site and boasts similarities to other medieval towns in mainland Europe. Supposedly one of the most haunted places in the world, Edinburgh's Old Town also contains a network of underground vaults which were once inhabited by immigrants during the industrial revolution. Although not lived in any more, tourists flock in their thousands to visit the underground city and hear about its spooky inhabitants.
For those who prefer the opulence of Georgian architecture and perfectly manicured public gardens, Edinburgh's prestigious 'New Town' is the place to be and be seen. Created by 22-year-old architect James Craig in 1766, the New Town heralded the move away from cramped medieval tenement living and the desire for a more elegant way of life. With a series of ornate squares dividing the city's shopping and residential areas, Edinburgh's Georgian buildings and layout are considered some of the finest in the world.
For those who can't decide which part of the city they prefer there's always the city centre which boasts views and buildings from both the Georgian and medieval era. With the beautiful Princes Street Gardens providing a green belt between the two areas there's also plenty of green space; idea, for gentle strolls in the summer sunshine. Book into an Edinburgh city centre hotel for example and you will be treated to panoramic views across this bustling hub renowned for its arts, literature and trendy eateries.
Want to see Edinburgh for yourself? Why not book a trip to this magical city today and immerse yourself in the Old Town and New Town in equal measure for the full Edinburgh experience.
