Memphis Style Barbecue is alive and well in St. Louis, Missouri. Just across the Missouri river, in Saint Charles County, there is an awesome little barbecue joint called Lil Mickey's Memphis Barbeque. In true classic barbecue fashion, Lil' Mickey's is off the beaten path, a little hard to find, a tiny little place, but boy oh boy is it truly wonderful.

Lil Mickey's menu isn't fancy either. Basically, smoked meat, served either as a sandwich or as a dinner. The dinner is served with choice of two sides, baked beans, Cole slaw, or potato salad. The sides are tasty, but at Lil' Mickey's, it isn't about sides. It's about the meat, and their velvety red barbecue sauce. The meats are traditional Memphis barbecue fair:

  • Pulled or chopped pork shoulder
  • Chopped beef brisket
  • Pork ribs
  • Pork rib tips
  • Pork steaks
  • Chicken
  • Smoked turkey breast

For the customer that can't decide, the sampler platter is a good choice, but be careful. There is enough food for two, (or one hungry journalist.) The sampler platter has 3 pork ribs, one chicken quarter, beef brisket, and pork shoulder. Choice of 2 small sides and bread is also included.

The sandwiches at Lil' Mickey's also are delicious. The tender smoked meat served on a gigantic white bread roll, smothered in the delicious sauce. Don't try to pick this up, you'll need a fork. The pork shoulder sandwich is served with Cole slaw on the sandwich, a very nice touch, and traditional for the Memphis area. The Mighty Mini sandwiches on the menu also are delicious, and really are big enough for a meal. Many people who have a hard time deciding between pork or brisket just order one of each of the mini's. That's the way to go at Mickey's.

Lil' Mickeys really is Memphis style 'que. The owners, Charles and Robbie Butler trace their barbecue roots directly back to Memphis. Robbie Butler is cousins with the Neely's from Memphis, and now made famous by FoodTV. She learned how to cook barbecue, the same as they did, at the side of her uncle, Jim Neely, the legendary owner/ pit master of Jim Neely's Interstate Barbecue in Memphis.

Don't expect fancy china and table service. There are three tiny tables, the meat is served in Styrofoam clam shells, and eaten with plastic utensils. That matters not at all. It's all about the meat and sauce, not the eaten room or the lack of fancy silver. In fact, most people do take out.
