Discover the Magic of Breeding Betta Fish aka Siamese Fighting Fish
Breeding Betta Fish for profit or fun can be very rewarding and provide large amounts of pleasure but for many would be enthusiasts it can be quite daunting. Where to start, is always the first question as there are just so many aspects in successfully breeding Betta Fish. If you take it all just step at a time though, it can be a very simple process indeed.
Therefore your first consideration should always be to test the waters first. If you are considering breeding Betta fish for profit right from the start then maybe it's best to start off on a small scale. The equipment required the produce large quantities of saleable Bettas can be be quite extensive and involve quite a bit of initial expense. On the other hand if you decide to start off slowly and breed just one pair of Bettas at a time you can then keep the size of your set up much more manageable and cost effective.
This of course can be the secret to your success and that is, just how simple and convenient your breeding set up is to manage and operate. Betta Fish are tropical fish that come from South East Asia and do require a constant temperature of around 27 C (80 F). Having said that though don't think that you need to live in a tropical climate to be successful in breeding Bettas. It is possible to easily and cost effectively breed Bettas in the depths of a cold winter if you know how to set up your breeding area correctly from the start.
Once you have set up your Betta breeding area your next step will be to select a pair of suitable Bettas. There are many places you can go to buy Bettas but if you are serious about producing a spawn of Betta fry that will grow into Bettas that others will want buy off you or even accept as a present then you will need to get a quality pair. Betta fish can produce anywhere up to 400 to 500 fry in just one spawn so be concious to produce fish that are in demand. Therefore you may find it beneficial to find a reputable breeder in your area than can advise you not only in selection but also on keeping and breeding Bettas as well.
Another option to consider right from the start is the type of Betta Splendens you wish to breed, as there are several options. Probably the most common is the Veil Tail which is usually the one most new Betta owners are introduced to in the world of Bettas. It is the variety found in most pet stores but it is not very well regarded by the majority of Betta enthusiasts therefore it may be wise not to invest your time with this variety.
Therefore you will most likely find yourself considering either a Halfmoon or Crowntail pair. Both of these Bettas look quite different. The Halfmoon has a rounded tail which is the shape of a semi circle with a spread of 180 degrees. The Crowntail has fins where the ends of the rays extend past the webbing of each of the three main fins and as such the shape resembles that of a crown. Other options you can consider are Double Tails, Delta Tails and Plakats which are the short finned variety.
Whichever variety of Betta Splendens you do ultimately decide on may just depend on what you can source in your area. Ultimately though your choice should be one that is appealing to you personally as there is no point going to the trouble of breeding a variety of Betta that you don't really care for. Therefore do you research thoroughly and remember if you can't find what you're looking for in your area, it is possible to buy Bettas from quality Breeders through the mail.
