Entertaining Games For Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving kicks off the winter holiday season in the United States. It is a holiday that emphasizes family gatherings with a large dinner of traditional foods such as turkey with stuffing, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin pie. Although often identified with food and football, Thanksgiving is a time of thanks for the blessings of the previous year and the family members who support us all year long.
Thanksgiving is a warm holiday at the beginning of the cold winter season. Businesses close and most people get an extended holiday. Some people use the occasion to begin shopping for the Christmas holiday. It should be a time to forget your cares and worries and relax with friends and family, including members of the family you may not get to see very often.
In addition to planning the meals and cleaning the house, you also have to plan something for the kids. Everyone can enjoy the food, and adults can enjoy the conservation after dinner, but the children will soon grow restless. Most kids get five days of vacation over the Thanksgiving holiday and it's too cold to play outside. To keep them out of mischief you should find something to keep them amused. It can be hard to keep watch over the children while finding time to socialize. Here are a few suggestions.
The Stuffed Animal Corner
Kids love plush animals and can have a a lot of fun with a bunch of them. If you gather enough stuffed animals together so that each child has a toy, you can avoid fighting and give them something to keep them entertained. You could even have a theme for your collection of stuffed animals, such as forest animals. Assemble some stuffed foxes, bunnies, raccoons, teddy bears, or even a moose. By giving the animals a common theme to relate them, the kids can pretend that they are having a forest adventure without going outside. They could even put on a play or show to entertain the adults while dessert is served.
Coloring Books for Holidays
For the younger children, coloring books can be a great form of entertainment. Just pick up a few with holiday themes and let the kids pick out their favorites to color or doodle on. These books come in many varieties and have pictures for each season, such as pilgrims, turkeys, Santa Claus, reindeer, a menorah, snowmen, elves and lots more. In addition to allowing the kids to be creative, it will also be a quiet activity. You can have a peaceful talk after dinner while the children do something safe and calm.
Guessing Games
Older children will appreciate something more advanced. Just cut some simple pictures out of a magazine. Cars, animals, sports, or clothing will do. Next glue them to pieces of cardboard and put them face-down to allow each kid to pick one without anyone else seeing it. Then the other children can guess what each picture is while providing clues about their own picture.
Getting organized with a few games and some entertainment for the kids can make your Thanksgiving a lot more fun for everybody. You can enjoy a peaceful dinner and conversation, so give it a try!
