The "precious" Moment - Can It Happen Again Without Weight Loss?
The moment was precious. Really, it was as precious as they come. I'm talking about the 2010 Oscars when larger than life icon Oprah Winfrey talked so beautifully to larger than healthy young Best Actress nominee, Gabourey Sidibe. I can still see the tears streaming down the young woman's face as she took in every affirmation and every word of encouragement from the world's most successful woman. But you just knew it was only a matter of time, didn't you? From Rave Reviews of a Debut – to Raging Debate of a Future. Her debut performance as Claireece "Precious" Jones in the film, "Precious" was a huge success. The Brooklyn-born and Harlem-raised actress got to audition for the part through one of her directors at Lehman College. It was one of those rare long shots at stardom that paid off overnight. You know what it's like here in today's America. Stars are often built up quickly only to be knocked down even faster by certain members of the media. Now just one week after the Academy Awards, comes heavy criticism and speculation about the talent and future of the charismatic but obese young actress. Some critics seem to be confusing the personal life of Gabourey Sidibe with the character she played in "Precious." They're saying she will never get another movie role until she loses weight. Howard Stern has been quoted as saying on his radio show, "The reason Sidibe didn't win the award is because there wasn't as much acting except walking around like in a catatonic state. It was more about her physical appearance that actually made her great in that movie. There really wasn't much acting involved. She was more of a prop." Still, the sky may be the limit for Gabourey Sidibe. She already landed a second role in "Yelling to the Sky," an independent feature film set in New York, starring the mega-talented Don Cheadle. In this film, Gabourey plays a bad girl. One weight loss company is promoting itself everywhere possible by spreading the word that it has offered the actress a one-year supply of their product to help her lose weight in return for her endorsement. Do you hope Gabourey Sidibe loses weight? Of course. It would be a great thing for her health and her future in life, not just acting. As great as her debut film performance was, a real-life weight loss success story from Gabby would be as inspirational and motivational for others as Oprah Winfrey's on stage tribute was for her.
