Sousse and Its Variety of Cultures
The charming resort city of Sousse lies on the Tunisia eastern coast, on the Gulf of Hammamet, which is the part of the Mediterranean sea. The city is located 140 km south of the country’s capital, Tunis. Starting from the 9th century B.C. the Phoenicians, the Byzantines, the Arabs and the Romans conquered this “fertile city”, and each nation left a part of its cultural heritage here. It is therefore of no surprise that nowadays visitors from all over the world note the similarity of the Tunisian and their native cultures and are coming back here again and again. Travellers are attracted by Sousse’s mild climate, beautiful Mediterranean coast and friendliness of local people. Sousse is also popular with Tunisians, who are anxious for a peaceful and secluded rest – they like to join crowds of people having their vacations on sandy beaches and lively embankment.
Despite the rapid growth of modern resort hotels that are densely located along the coast, the inner part of the city is still very charming and captivating. Medina, the ancient part of Sousse, was preserved safe and south and is considered to be the most beautiful (not the largest, though) Tunisia quarter. Hundreds of colourful shops selling an uncountable amount of local goods – from carpets and pottery to leather bags and olive oil, are hidden in the labyrinth of narrow covered streets under Ribat, a medieval fortress. A huge modern shopping mall can also be found outside Medina. However, those are not only shopping and beaches that make Sousse an attractive place. Located in an old castle, the city museum is famous for its collection of mosaic, masks, statues and other relics left here from the times of Roman occupation. The city also boasts of its well-preserved ancient Christian catacombs and marble tombs. Among the other city attractions you will find an aquapark in Port El Kantaoui, not far from Hannibal Palace hotel, a huge Soula shopping center – a remarkable place especially if to consider the fact that all the prices here are fast and tourists don’t have to bargain for hours. There are also Caraib casino not far from the city centre, popular Samara and Marokkana discos, ice cream house Casa Delgelata where more than 100 sorts of ice cream are sold, talassotherapy centre in the Abou Nawas Bou Jaafar hotel and Oasis Park El Kantaoui botanical garden.
Tourists are offered a great variety of restaurants where they can order their favourite delicacies – from pizza to French food, but the most popular local dish is couscous – stewed semolina granules. Most of the 5-star hotels are located in luxurious restaurants, others are spread all around the city. Tourist nightlife is concentrated in resort hotels where lots of dance and entertainment events are organised. When the night comes, the youth prefer to gather on the coast. Those who prefer active vacations can go fishing, diving, windsurfing and water skiing. Tourists who are eager to get acquainted with Sousse outskirts have a chance to join in sea excursions along the Tunisia coast.
