Tips For Choosing a Medieval Battle Axe
Nothing says power and fierceness like a medieval battle axe. Not as subtle as a sword, the battle axe wasn’t made for grace, it was made to get the job done.
Medieval warriors used a battle axe to hack through lines of oncoming hordes with very little effort. Even the least practiced warrior could excel with a medieval battle axe.
These type of axes are typically double sided with a strong wooden handle. Blades could be intricately made with cut outs and scroll work, or just left plain. Check out these medieval battle axes to see a variety of what’s available.
Roman Battle Axes:
For centuries the Roman warrior ruled the planet. With great skill with shield, gladius and axe he was a sight to behold. And run from. The Romans took a pretty basic tool like the axe and made it into a fierce weapon.
Typical Medieval Roman battle axes were no more than two feet long. They featured double blades in different styles. Some of those styles were shaped like bats wings and the wings of eagles. The pommel of the axe would often have the image of the appropriate legion identifying where the warrior was from.
The Romans were fond of metal handles and often used leather grips to keep a good hold to their weapon. More intricate medieval battle axes produced by the Romans were stamped with gold and silver. These axes shined brilliantly in the sunlight of the battlefield.
Medieval Berserker Club and Axe:
Berserkers were no nonsense kind of warriors. Rather than choose the average double sided axe, the berserker used spiked clubs too. Berserkers had a long history of crazy fighting (hence the word berserk) but with this weapon they did double the damage.

Medieval Halberds:
A Medieval halberd is an interesting weapon. It’s an axe only with a longer handle. Wielding a halberd meant having some skill. It took great strength to be able to swing and lunge with these dimensions.
Another feature that set them apart is that although they were axes they only had one blade. Instead of a second blade a halberd had a small dagger or stabbing tool. Used chiefly in the 14- 16th centuries in Europe, the halberd was perfect for fighting hand to hand or against enemies on horseback.
You may recognize the halberd as the weapon of choice for many royal guards. It’s still used today in the traditional dress of elite royal soldiers like Swiss honor guard. A Medieval halberd is a simple yet lovely weapon for any collection.
Skull Battle Axes:
A Medieval battle axe collection would not be complete without a skull battle axe. The image of the skull swinging on the blades of a weapon was meant to invoke fear into the enemy.
