How an LCD Monitor Works
A Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) computer monitor has wide and flat screen, making it far different from the ordinary CRT monitor. It is also thinner and lighter compared to a CRT monitor, which has thick and big appearance, as well as heavy weight.
The use of liquid crystals was first discovered in 1988. An LCD monitor uses crystals to obtain its important functions. Specifically, this device is created by two pieces of polarized glasses or substrates. These substances contain liquid crystal material between them.
A liquid crystal is a liquid chemical that will correctly align when subjected to an electric field. Once it is properly aligned, it allows passage of light, which is known as the fluorescent light. This light or backlight passes to the first substrate. The electrical current is the one used by an LCD to align crystals to create wonderful images with well defined colors, making them more magnificent to look at. Its digital display technology creates clearer virtual images and graphics due to the shinning light of liquid crystals and colored filters.
Another great thing about this computer flat screen device is that, it has low glare that helps in reducing eye strain. It also lacks flicker, allowing you to use the device even in a long period of time, without causing stress to the eyes.
There are Active and Passive Matrix computer displays, but LCD monitors commonly used the active ones. Their glass displays have film transistors that arrange other tiny transistors and capacitors in a matrix in order to create best quality displays.
Some LCD's used passive matrix. They used an array of conductive metals to charge pixels. They are rarely used today despite of their low costs because they have slow responses to time and have complicated voltage control. They are also less beneficial compared to active matrix computer monitors.
LCD monitors are commonly used on laptops before, but today are also popular on desktop computers. Indeed, their advantages caused their popularity to rise in the computer market industry.
