The natural cosmetics and personal care product market is currently flooded with products claiming to be natural. The only problem is that not all are actually natural. Due to a loophole in federal regulations companies can brand a cosmetic or personal care product as natural when the product is in fact full of synthetic ingredients and chemicals. Unfortunately, these companies suffer no repercussions. It is a completely unregulated term, which makes it even more difficult to determine which products are natural and which are not. This is the case with crystal deodorants, also known as rock deodorant and deodorant stone.
There are two types of deodorant stones available on the market, a natural one and a synthetic one. And, as a consumer of natural deodorants you most likely choose a natural product for the desire to avoid putting chemicals on your body. So, it is important to educate yourself on how to tell the difference between a natural deodorant stone and a synthetic deodorant stone.
The Science
First, a little background, natural deodorant stones are made of potassium alum natural mineral salt. Potassium alum is a naturally occurring mineral with anti-microbial properties and the ability to act as a pH adjuster. What this means is that it can create a pH environment that inhibits the growth of bacteria. As it is soluble in water, when the mineral is rubbed on wet skin an invisible layer resides on the skins surface and subsequently adjusts the pH level on your skin. It is absolutely harmless and does not penetrate into the skin. It merely sits on the surface and prevents the growth of odor-causing bacteria.
Since potassium alum natural deodorants are so effective at inhibiting the growth of odor-causing bacteria, companies have found cheaper ways to produce the active odor prevention ingredient other than enduring the costly expenses of mining the mineral, potassium alum. Manufacturers are now capable of creating synthetic potassium alum to be used for crystal deodorant production, which eliminates the need for mining and extracting the alum crystal mineral.
The synthetic alum is chemically synthesized by mixing aluminum hydroxide, a cosmetic opacifying agent, with potassium sulfate in sulfuric acid. All which are extremely abundant ingredients and cheap, thereby manufacturing synthetic alum at a much cheaper cost than its natural counterpart.
The Appearance
The natural mineral salt, potassium alum, occurs in nature as a colorless, translucent crystalline stone. Therefore, the natural deodorant stone is colorless and translucent. Synthetic deodorant stones are opaque and white. During the manufacturing process of the synthetic alum, aluminum hydroxide is used, which in itself is a white, opaque powder, which then creates a white, opaque deodorant stone.
The Effect
Potassium alum acts as a very effective deodorant. When a pure potassium alum crystal or crystal deodorant stone is rubbed on the skin the body can stay odor free for up to 24 hours without the use of synthetic ingredients, harmful chemical compounds or heavy fragrances. Crystal deodorant is hypoallergenic, completely invisible on the skin and leaves no white residue or stain or your clothes or skin. The only thing left on the skin is a fine layer of potassium alum natural mineral salt, which you cannot see, feel or smell.
However, if you apply the synthetic deodorant stone on the body you are effectively applying synthetic alum on the skin, which therefore includes small traces of unwanted ingredients, such as aluminum hydroxide.
