4 Key Concepts to Church Interior Design

Churches are not exempt from elegant interior design. In fact, if you go back in history, churches have been trailblazers in interior design. Of course, their style is often connected to a religious theme. Now, design choices for churches can be broken down into 4 specific and vital areas.

Aside from the obvious religious nature, churches are famous for their stained glass windows. They're one of the first things that come to mind when think of a church. Back in the day, these beautiful pieces were often stolen from churches. Fast forward to today. Stained glass windows have become the pinnacle of church interior design. So much that these stained glass windows get really really pricy. More donations please.

If you're a Christian, then you'll know that every church has what is called the Stations of the Cross. These stations are prayer and meditation points around the church that portray the life of Jesus. Basically, you go to each station, complete your prayers and then move to the next station. Since these stations are heavily visited by the community, I'm sure the church wouldn't mind having them designed properly.

The stations can be as simple as a plaque and as elaborate as hand-crafted sculptures. They do, after all, depict the life of Jesus and how he died to save mankind. The next time you visit a church, take notice of the stations. They're commonly along the church walls or sometimes on the pillars. The proper spacing of these stations also takes into account that there can be multiple parishioners at any given station.

Third is the altar. The altar is the center of church interior design. It's commonly made of a marble top or layered over a cement structure. Because some churches aren't all that rich, a lot of them modernize with different surfaces covering a wooden structure. The altar is probably the most vital piece in church interior design. A lot of the early churches only had these in the beginning. Now, part of the altar is a place called the tabernacle. The tabernacle is a sacred place where the eucharist is kept. It holds the ceremonial bread and wine that will be used during the service. The taberacles are usually laden with colored velvet cloth surrounding a wooden box. Sometimes, churches do get carried away and show tabernacles plated with gold. Nevertheless, it is the most sacred area in the church. It symbolizes the body and blood of Jesus Christ. The tabernacle is usually located behind the altar.

The other main and important piece of church interior design is the seats themselves commonly referred to as pews. A pew is a long bench that will have a padded place to kneel at the foot of it. Churches do not normally have individual seating as the pew has been standard seating in churches for centuries.

The final piece are the seats. The seats or benches in churches are referred to as pews. Not only is the design of the pew important, but the way it's laid out plays a key role in church interior design.

These four areas define the key concepts for church interior design. They are tried and true methods that haven't been changed in centuries.
