George Strait Tickets - A Country Legend Puts His Spurs Back On
As one of the most successful country stars of the 1980s, George Strait is a name that carries a lot of weight. Even several decades later, Strait's music is appreciated by a broad range of country fans, and his influence is felt in many of the major country figures still performing.
Still, though this artist's name was Strait, his path to stardom was anything but. He was a wanderer-a rancher by training, who finally found his calling not in the land his family had owned for more than a century, but on the road, in bars and clubs, where eager ears appreciated his music.
Strait was born in 1952 in Pearsall, TX. His parents split while he was still a child, with his mother leaving with his sister in tow, and he and his brothers staying with their father on the ranch. He played in a garage band in high school, but other than that, nothing would hint at the bright musical future in store for George Strait.
He graduated and left for college, like many students do. But the academic world wasn't for him. He dropped out, married his high school squeeze, then joined the army for a few years. He played in a country band while in the service, then returned to college for an agriculture degree. He seemed intent to return to a ranching life.
But the siren's call was strong. He formed a band called Ace in the Hole, which put out a few records but never gained mainstream traction. By the end of the '70s, he was fixed on a musical career, trying his hand in Nashville and ultimately not succeeding.
It wasn't until 1979, when Strait became friends with a club owner named Erv Woolsey, that he finally caught a break. Woolsey had several record executives listen to a live performance of Strait. They were impressed enough to ink a deal, and Strait, after all his wandering, finally had a start in the music business.
He became a familiar name on the singles charts, with songs like "Unwound," "Down and Out," "If You're Thinking You Want a Stranger (There's One Coming Home)" and most importantly, "Fool Hearted Memory." His albums did well, earning him gold and platinum platters to hang on his wall. But he represented a very old school kind of country artist, with more of a honky-tonk influence in his work that later artists would lack. That's made him especially appealing to fans of traditional country, while the country pop of artists like, say, Garth Brooks, took over in the '90s.
That's not to say Strait meant less to country. Even throughout the '90s, Strait's album sold well, and he has continued to record well into the new millennium, often breaking with tradition a bit in order to experiment and explore new sounds.
