Pawnbrokers Replacing Coffee Shops on the Highstreet?
Past mention of the word pawn broker may have stirred up images of a shop in a dark alleyway with a Fagan or Ebenezer Scrooge type character behind a dim counter, giving away pennies in exchange for all your life possessions! Seen as a last resort for those desperate individuals who can't get a loan from anywhere else, many would not have even considered a pawnbroker loan. But it seems all of that may have changed...
It has come to light that pawnbroking is a service now used by a large number of people in the UK and increasingly by the middle-classes. The Metro recently explained ‘Pawnbrokers could become as common as coffee shops on the high street as banks continue to deny people easy credit.'
So when did the pawnbroking trend start and who are the major players? Well, pawnbroker Albemarle and Bond have recently posted huge profits and the profits of high street rival H &T's increased 70% at the beginning of 2010 up from £8.5m £14.5m. Des Milligan, head of the National Pawnbrokers Association believes "More middle-class people have been attracted to pawnbrokers because of the credit crunch".
Online lenders have brought pawnbroking even further into the 21st century with more and more people looking to the internet for funding. Online pawnbrokers such as borro.com, who lend up to 70% against an item's value, have benefited from this popularity doubling in size in the last six months. Their more discreet, transparent, and modern approach to the service, also adds to the appeal. Registered pawnbrokers such as borro.com are now regulated by the Credit Consumer Act and must adhere to a strict code of practise. And unlike some bank or payday loans, pawnbroker's interest rates do not compound. A flat rate means customers know that they'll pay the same amount each month.
Contrary to belief, statistics show that between 70 and 80% of all pawn items online are eventually redeemed compared to 55 to 60% on the high street. In fact, the majority of pawnbroker's want their customers to come back and claim their items. They do not want the hassle of selling on items but if they do, they are then obligated to return to the customer any proceeds or profits from the sale of unredeemed items valued at over £75.
The stigma which was once attached to the pawnbroking industry seems to have been lifted since the emergence of the credit crunch. With the number of high street chains doubling since 2003, and experiencing an increase in profits since the start of 2010, pawnbroking has since become the best alternative to selling. Instead of individuals looking to the nearest auction house or ebay, individuals are now remembering their assets are investments, and capitalising on them further by releasing the collateral from their assets with a pawn loan.
