Fantasy Swords – What’s Your Fantasy?

Remember Dungeons & Dragons?  It is a fantasy role playing game that became very popular in the 1980s.  The popularity of Dungeons & Dragons, the role playing game, may have diminished somewhat, but the concept has not.  The sale of video games similar to the role playing game has never stopped, nor has the sale of fantasy items like fantasy swords and dragon figurines and posters.

Recent popular movies have also boosted the popularity of fantasy swords.  Lord of the Rings and A Knight’s Tale come immediately to mind.  People want fantasy swords as much as a way to remember their favorite movies as to have a really cool sword hanging on their wall.  Movie memorabilia fantasy swords are replicas in all cases except one, which is if you have the opportunity to purchase the actual sword used in the movie.

There is an exception in some cases of movie memorabilia fantasy swords, however.  Some fantasy swords used in movies are actually duplicates, meaning there may be three or four Excaliburs used in one movie.   There is of course Excalibur stuck in the boulder, and then there will be another identical Excalibur that Arthur will carry throughout the movie.  There may even be a third as a backup, but there is no way to know if the backup was actually used in the movie unless they tell you.

Fantasy swords are not limited to medieval or movie swords.  There are other styles of swords that are quite popular in which people purchase because they have a fantasy of being a Samurai or because they have a great respect for the Armed Forces, or because they are collectors of military memorabilia.

Samurai swords come and go in popularity based on the movies because movies about Samurai come and go in popularity.  But the people who are really interested in owning a Samurai sword are people who are interested in the Samurai culture, the martial arts, or are perhaps a descendant of a Samurai warrior.

Military memorabilia includes military swords because back in the days of the Civil War the soldiers actually fought with swords as well as guns.  Before those days, swords were the main weapon used to fight a war.  The people who are interested in these types of fantasy swords might be military collectors, veterans, or descendents of a sword carrying soldier.

There are a lot of reasons that people want to own fantasy swords.  Each person has a reason unique to them.  You can find these swords for sale on the internet easily, there are catalogs that sell fantasy swords.  You can also find the swords at flea markets and traveling extravaganza sales in many cases.  What’s your fantasy, and which sword depicts it?
