One day, after David had become established as King over Israel, he asked, "Who can I bless today? Who, of the household of Saul, can I show kindness to?" He did not ask, "Who deserves the kindness of God?" No one deserves kindness from God. That's the meaning of grace - undeserved, unmerited favour. And, if anyone did not deserve the kindness of David it was a descendant of Saul. Saul had tried many times to murder David.
In those days, when a new dynasty came to power the new king would quickly put to death any possible threats to the throne from the previous dynasty. Mephibosheth was a grandson of Saul. He was five years old when David ascended the throne. Upon hearing that David had been crowned as king, Mephibosheth's nurse fled in terror carrying him in her arms. As she ran, she fell and dropped Mephibosheth and he became lame. He was carried to the land of Gilead where he found refuge at Lo-debar. The name Lo-debar means 'a place of no pasture'.
His nurse ran from David because she thought that he was like other kings - cruel and vindictive. So Mephibosheth became crippled, not because of what he did but because of what someone did to him. All those years his nurse and others he stayed with would have told him, "The reason you are lame is because of David. The reason you live in this hole is because of David. David did this to you." So he grew up hating David.
Also, he lived in ignorance of the covenant that existed between his father Jonathan and David. Because Jonathan had been loyal to David, David entered into a covenant with him, promising that he would never harm him or any of his descendants.
Many Suffer Because God Has Been Misrepresented To Them, Or Because They Are Ignorant Of The New Covenant
Many suffer today either because someone has misrepresented God to them or because they are ignorant of the covenant which God has made with Jesus, our Mediator and Representative.
But David was not like other kings. And when he wanted to show kindness to someone from Jonathan's family he sent for Ziba, a servant of the house of Saul. He asked if there was anyone remaining from Saul's family. Ziba replied, "There is a son of Jonathan; but he is lame." Ziba represents the Law, which always draws attention to our condition.
So David sent for Mephibosheth and said to him, "Do not fear, for I will surely show you kindness for Jonathan your father's sake; and will restore to you all the land of Saul your grandfather; and you shall eat bread at my table continually" (2 Sam.9:7). What parts of us cannot be seen when we are seated at a table? Our legs and feet! Under the table lameness is hidden.
This story is a beautiful picture of the grace of God. Just as David initiated kindness towards Mephibosheth on account of the covenant he had made with Jonathan before Mephibosheth was born, so God demonstrated His love towards us based entirely upon the covenant which He made with Christ before the foundation of the world. He doesn't ask, "Who deserves blessing?" but, "Who is included in the New Covenant? Who can I bless today for Jesus' sake?"
At His Table All Our Blemishes And Failures Are Hidden
God brings us to His banqueting table where His banner over us is love. At His table all our blemishes and failures are hidden. Instead, He sets before us the remembrance of Christ and bids us feast on all the riches of His grace, i.e. righteousness, healing, blessing, peace, prosperity, etc. These things are ours, not because of our ability to walk correctly. Our walk didn't bring us to the table and our walk cannot keep us there. We are seated at the table, and will remain there, on account of a covenant that was made before we were ever born!
The name 'Mephibosheth' means 'one who destroys shame; a dispeller of shame'. He is a picture of someone who initially he sees himself as unworthy, "a dead dog." But as he receives revelation of his new creation identity he refuses to wallow in shame and self-contempt and chooses instead to live in dignity, as a son of the King!
Through the grace of God we are not only forgiven, but made sons and heirs of God. We are brought to the King's own table and invited to feed on the riches of His grace. Let us put our feet under the table, then, and enjoy the feast!
