Have you ever received a phone call from someone that asked to meet you for lunch? Without any explanation we traditionally think, what does that person want from me? Are they going to try and "sell" me something I don't want or need? How can I tell them I'm not interested without being misinterpreted?

When I first went into business, I would make it a goal of mine to meet with 3 new people each week to learn more about their business. I told them that I was actively building my own company and would be networking a lot and possibly meet someone they should get to know.

I was taking a huge leap of faith and investing my time in other people. I was sincere in my intention and yet there were people that couldn't accept the fact that there wasn't a catch or ulterior motive. I wasn't setting them up to try and "sell" them something. In fact, I never even mentioned what I did at all. Talk about giving without wanting anything in return.

Naturally, after I spent time getting to know them and of course, sending them some referrals; we started developing a professional relationship. Now, they were very interested in what I was doing so they eagerly helped when they could.

Sometimes, I would offer free marketing advice and help them get new clients. If you always look for ways to give more, you'll be amazed at how the universe responds even indirectly sometimes. Think of it as tithing and donating your support to others in need.

Occasionally, I would meet someone that took advantage of my generosity and instead of working with me, decided to implement my ideas on their own.   What they didn't realize is how damaging that can be for their reputation, not too mention it ruined the possibility of me ever recommending them to my own network. Unfortunately, they are no longer in business.

If you have something to share that's valuable, it's OK to share it with others as long as you don't expect a return. When I meet someone for the first time, I try to figure out what area they need the most support in and offer suggestions to help them. I look for people that need to be connected to others for their expertise.

Another great way to give back is to promote them to others and recognize their achievements. If you can shine a spotlight on them in any way possible, you'll be the one to shine.

Here's a simple idea that has proven results. When you receive phenomenal service from someone, take their picture and put them into a greeting card or newsletter with your own personal testimonial, then send it to your own customers or people in your network.  When you interview someone, tell others what you learned and what makes them special to you.

Never keep score about referrals you give out because sometimes it comes back to you in ways you never imagined. Always be looking out for the other person's interests and not your own. Eventually, you'll receive an avalanche of referrals and have more business than you can handle!
