If there was one thing which makes Willow Tree figurines so unique, it would be the fact that they have been created without any facial expressions.
Because of this, the body language of each sculpture becomes incredibly significant as to the meaning of each piece. The way the figurines are standing, sitting or holding each other is no accident. The position each figurine has been molded into has been done so for the reason that it is highly representative of an emotion or relationship that is very easy for anyone to relate to. This doesn't mean that each piece will mean the same to everybody, the emotions and relationships portrayed are broad, but personal.
As an example, there is a sculpture called "Child of my Heart" that is of a woman warmly holding a small child against her chest. This particular piece has been painted so that the child is a different color to the mother. This could mean very different things to someone who has been adopted or to a woman intending on adopting, but to both it reflects a very personal feeling of love. Of course this figurine has an endless amount of interpretations and could mean many things to many different people, the adoption angle is just one example. More or less every single figurine has been crafted into simple positions such as "Angel of Mine", but it is in their simplicity that so many people can find a connection to each piece.
A woman holding a baby so gently and lovingly is such a simple act, but it is tremendously symbolic of the love shared between a mother and her child and this is a feeling that almost every mother and child can relate to. Each piece doesn't necessarily have to be symbolic of the feelings involved in a relationship though, there are also quite a few figurines which are of a single figure in a position that represents a variety of other broad feelings and emotions. There is the figurine called "Cherish" which portrays a pregnant woman holding her stomach gently and looking down at it. The way she holds one hand below her stomach, as if to hold up her unborn child, and the other one on top, as if to be protecting her unborn child's head, suggests a mother-to-be, eager to have her child so she can protect and love them.
This position, much like "Child of my Heart", is an incredibly simple but again powerful one that portrays a very particular angle on a very significant emotion. As well as single figurines and relationship figurines there are also a few that use other kinds of symbols to help portray the pieces meaning
Even though the simplicity of a sculptures position can mean so much, using symbols such as animals or other objects can create an even more powerful personal reaction to a piece. Susan Lordi, the artist behind the Willow Tree brand has been quoted as saying:
"I like to use animals or objects from nature, which can be metaphors for human experiences...rosemary for remembrance, a bird for healing, flowers for beauty. These items can mean different things to different viewers. I try to give each piece another level of meaning that's not always obvious - that the viewer can sense or imagine."
A simple example of this can be seen in the piece called "Wisdom", which shows a female sitting down and reading a book. The way the figure is so caught up in her book implies a love for learning which further implies a great wisdom which is an idea that could not have been achieved in this way without the addition of an object - the book.
With so many different pieces available, there are tonnes of objects of symbolism and poses to interpret in so many different ways so there is bound to be one (or many!) that can and will mean something personal to you or someone you know.
